In addition to all of the wonderful new features available on the new iphone os 3.0, there are over 40 security vulnerabilities that have been fixed. Some of these include this one which may pertain to Exchange admins out there:

Accepting an untrusted Exchange server certificate results in storing an exception on a per-hostname basis. On the next visit to an Exchange server contained in the exception list, its certificate is accepted with no prompt and validation. This may lead to the disclosure of credentials or application data. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of untrusted certificate exceptions.

and this interesting one:

A logic issue in the handling of ICMP echo request packets may cause an assertion to be triggered. By sending a maliciously crafted ICMP echo request packet, a remote attacker may be able to cause an unexpected device reset.

So, in case you’re waiting for some reason to update, go ahead and take the plunge and do it. Its my belief, that as users become more mobile and start keeping more of their private information on these devices, the attempts at hacking mobile devices will become more common.

Here’s a link to more info straight from Apple regarding these fixes:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3639

Let’s be safe out there…

One of the great features in Windows Mobile is the ability to tether your device to your computer in order to piggy-back on your mobile devices internet connection. This works great in airports or coffee shops so you don’t have to pay for wi-fi usage. If you’re running Windows on your laptop and have ActiveSync installed, its pretty straightforward. However, if you’re running OSX, it can be a bit trickier to tether your WinMo device. These instructions were tested with a BlackJack II. Here’s how to do it:

In theory, you should be able to simply set up Internet Sharing on your Windows Mobile device with Bluetooth PAN. Then on your Mac, simply create a BlueTooth PAN connection. The problem with this is that you run the risk of eating up your mobile device’s battery much quicker as its using its 3G connection and its bluetooth connection simultaneouslly. Even though it should work, I never could get it going, anyways. Ideally, we want to plug the phone in via USB, so that it is charging while sharing its connection. OSX won’t support the standard ActiveSync USB Internet Sharing method, so you’ll need to do a little work to get it going.

First download these files

Unzip and Copy all three files to /Library/Modem Scripts

Back on your Windows Mobile device, in the USB connection settings, change USB to mode to MODEM instead of ActiveSync. You may get a warning here that ActiveSync won’t work when Modem is selected. Remember to change it back later when you are ready to sync up again with a Windows computer. Once you’ve selected modem, plug your device into your Mac via USB.

Now, go to your Network Preferences menu.

On the left side, you should see your list of Network Interfaces. Click the little “+” sign to add an interface. Click Interface drop down menu, and you should see a choice for “Samsung CDMA Technologies”. Go ahead and choose it, and click CREATE. it should populate itself on the left-hand pane now.

Highlight the new Samsung Entry, and on the right side make the following entries:

Configuration: Default

Telephone Number: wap.cingular

Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM

Password: CINGULAR1

Now click Advanced…

On the Modem Tab, make sure Vendor is Samsung and Model is GPRS (GSM/3G)

On the PPP tab:

For Session, Uncheck “Redial if Busy”

Next to Settings, choose CONFIGURATION and select “Send PPP echo packets” and uncheck: Use TCP header compression.

Apply all these changes and lock the Network Preferences, and you’re ready to test.

Its a good idea when testing to disable your Wi-Fi so you can be sure you’re genuinely using your mobile devices WAN.

Now, highlight the Samsung modem, and on the right side, click CONNECT. If all goes correct, you should see a little meter with your connection strength, and you should now be able to surf the web. Go for it!

I’ve used Microsoft’s voice command for years with various Windows Mobile phones. I like using it in the car, so I don’t have to fuss with the buttons for dialing. For the longest time, it was not a free piece of software, but with the release of WinMo 6.1 for the BlackJack II, they bundled Voice Command right in. This happens to be the best implementation of it yet, as it works perfectly with my bluetooth headset. Unfortunately, setting it up on your phone isn’t quite as intiutive. Here’s how to get it going on the BlackJack2.

Go to Start > Programs> Voice Command

Change Voice Enabled to “YES”
If you are using Bluetooth, you can change Announcement Routing to “Bluetooth if Available” if you like. What this means is that when the phone wants to make a voice announcement like “your battery is low” , it will try to send it out over Bluetooth.

The announcements setting will change when you want to hear announcements. You can choose to only hear them when your calendar is “Free” if you like.

Call Confirmations Setting will let you choose to hear a short vocal confirmation of the intended dialing target. So, when you say “call home”, it will say, “Call home?” to verify.

Dial confirmation will do the same as above, but for voice number dialing. So if you say “Dial 5-5-5-1-2-1-2″ it will repeat it back to you.

Announce Calls, when turned on, will announce all incoming calls to you.

Announce Messaging will announce incoming messages. You can further choose on ly to hear high priority messages announced.

Calendar Reminders will announce your appointments for you.

Media Selections will try to announce the name of the song that’s coming up.

Once you’ve got all the settings the way you want, hit Done.

If you’ve got a compatible bluetooth headset, you can simply tap your button and start using voice commands. Voice Command automatically understands entries in your contacts and many other useful words. So you can simply say things like “Call Home” or “Call wife mobile” or “when is my next appointment” and it will understand.

Here’s the biggest gotcha if you dont’ have a bluetooth headset. The Help feature tells you to use the Voice Command button. interestingly, it doesn’t tell you which button this is on the phone. To activate Voice Command on the BlackJack II keypad, hold down the Att-Globe looking key next to Caps/Shift.

Now, let’s be careful out there.

I spend a couple hours a day commuting in my car for work. If I’m not listening to NPR, I love listening to Sirius satellite radio while I’m driving . No commercials, pretty good song selection, decent sound quality. Works great in my car. Unfortunately, I can’t get good reception in my house due to the location of our windows and where the stereo system sits – so I can’t hook the Sirius receiver up to my home sound system without running wires all over the place. Thankfully I found a python script for streaming Sirius through your Xbox Media Center. Unfortunately it had fallen out of development and no longer worked. I recently updated this script and below you’ll find directions for installing it on your Xbox Media Center. There’s also a killer app for Windows Mobile devices that allows you to stream Sirius while you’re on the go. I use it on my BlackJack II when I’m jogging or sitting at the park with the kids. There are instructions for getting that going too. Remember, you must have a valid Sirius account for these to work. Test your account on the Sirius website and be sure you can stream successfully on your PC first. Also, not all Sirius stations are available for online streaming.

Installing XBMC Sirius Script

You’ll need an original Xbox running Xbox Media Center for this. I haven’t tested this on any other XBMC platforms.

Download the python script here:

In the Sirius folder, edit RunSirius.py. Look for this snippet of code and enter your Sirius username and password in quotes:

# SET ME! SET ME! SET ME!
USERNAME = “USERNAME”
PASSWORD = “PASSWORD”

Save the file.

If you’ve got Xbox Media Center running on your modded Xbox, I assume you already know how to initiate an FTP connection to your Xbox. Go ahead and connect and upload the entire Sirius directory to your SCRIPTS directory. On my Xbox this is on the Q: drive.

Back in the XBMC gui, navigate to Scripts, and run the RunSirius.py script. If you like you can rename this file later to default.py, and then when you click on the Sirius Folder it will run automatically.

If all goes well, you should be greeted by a list of categories. Work your way through the menu and click on the station you want to stream. You should see the media player kick in and give you a message about caching the content. Then your sweet digital music should begin to play.

A few notes:

You can pay a few Sirius a few bucks more a month and increase your bitrate to 128 mb/s, which sounds as good as the satellite receiver. Supposedly they are changing this pricing structure in the near future, so its possible this script may break.

If the caching is taking too long before your tunes start playing, go into your XBMC center settings and decrease the cache size for “Unknown type Cache – Internet”. You can drop this down to 256K or whatever figure works best for you.

Since it’s caching audio and the song title lookup is live, often it will display the next song’s title

Installing SiriusWM5 on Windows Mobile

Install TCPMP for for your device. Here’s a link to smartphone edition for Windows Mobile 6.1. This works on the BlackJackII. Download the file, transfer it over to your device via ActiveSync. In file explorer on your mobile device, click on the cab file to install it.

Download the wmv9 codecs for TCPMP here

Unzip the files and place both .DLLs and copy them to your /WINDOWS folder on your mobile device via ActiveSync.

Download and install via ActiveSync SiriusWm5 cab file here

Open SiriusWM5 on your Windows Mobile Device

Go to File > Settings.

Enter your Sirius Account information. Check USE TCPMP and, if its installed to your memory card, choose “TCPMP on MemCard”. Additionally, if you’ve anted up for higher quality stream, select “CD Quality Stream”. (CD Quality works great over Wifi or 3G, but will probably fail on Edge or lower). Save your settings.

Choose your station, and click Connect. You should be prompted to enter some CAPTCHA info, then TCPMP should start playing your stream.

note: Song Titles won’t display.

I read on Gizmodo today about a new GPS unit from Mio : the Mio Ma’amin (“Mio Believer”). Here’s a link to the original story from the Jerusalem Post.

“It lists thousands of kosher restaurants and includes the Book of Psalms, the three daily prayer services, the Traveler’s Prayer, a Hebrew calendar, and two versions of Grace After Meals.” Apparently GPS and Cell Phones are OK as long as there’s none of that dirty internet on them. Nice idea.

I wonder if it shuts down automatically on Friday night? Here are some other features I heard they are including:

1) Default voice of Jackie Mason
2) Yells at you in “Mother-In-Law Voice” when you miss your turn.
3) POI are all Doctor’s offices, mostly podiatrists and urologists

4) Special mode that guides by landmarks: “Make a right when you get to the hospital where Uncle Mort had his goiter removed…”

5) Speed Warnings over 25 MPH: “Oy Vey! You’re going too fast! You’re driving like a meshuginah”
6) Media Player preloaded with Yentl, the Jazz Singer, and Fiddler on the Roof
7) Routes you half-way through every trip to visit your Grandmother
8 ) Warns you when powering up that you look a little thin. “Have you been eating enough? Maybe you should have a nosh before you leave.”
9) Unfortunately, maps are only available for Boca Raton and the lower East Side of New York
10) Hot key to call your Grandson for help using the damn thing

One of the annoyances with “smart” phones these days is the inability to dial “Vanity” numbers – these are numbers like 1-800-FLOWERS. On a traditional phone, ABC map to the 2 key, DEF map to the 3 key…
Modern smartphones with QWERTY keyboards lke Blaackberries, Blackjacks, etc., typipcally don’t have a dedicated dialing pad with these mappings. On my BlackJack II, for instance, E is under the 1 key, R is under the 2 key and T is under the 3 key.

To dial 1-800-FLOWERS you need to be able to remember what all the crazy mappings are or have one in front of you to cheat. Now in Windows Mobile 6.1 Microsoft has added “Vanity Dialing” Turn it on, and you can dial with actual letters from your QWERTY keyboard. Here’s how to enable it:

From your Home screen press Start > Then Settings.
Make your way to the Key Settings sub menu
Choose Vanity Dialing
Turn Vanity Dialing On and Press Done.
You’ll see a message about Rebooting your phone. Press OK and Go ahead and do it. Press the Power Button and choose Power off.
Power the phone on again.

Now press the Dial Key.
You should see 123# in the top right corner of your screen to let you know that Vanity Dialing is enabled.

To dial 1800-FLOWERS , press 1-800 as you normally would, then press the SHIFT key once. You should see the 123# change to ABC. Now type FLOWERS. Then press the dial button. The numbers should automagically be translated to the traditional letter mappings. If you need to switch back to numeric dialing, you can press SHIFT again to disable the feature.

Good luck, and happy dialing.

It looks like they’ve take a good look at the iPhone and Android and put in some nice features. Most of the enhancements appear to be in Internet Explorer and various touch-related enhancements in the UI. Overall it looks polished and modern. The new Internet Explorer looks slick, and it appears from the video below that it supports Flash! The Lock Screen interface actually reminds me quite a bit of the updated Home Screen in Windows Mobile 6.1 Smartphone like on the BlackJack II. No word yet, apparently on what the 6.5 smartphone version of WinMo will look like.

Pandora is a great “music suggestion” service that allows you to stream music based on the Music Genome Project for free. If you haven’t tried it yet, click here to open a free account. You’ll love it: www.pandora.com

I was waiting for them to release a windows mobile compatible version of their software for my BlackJack II as they just released it for the iPhone recently. Sure enough, if you visit the Pandora site, they have indeed released a version for Windows Mobile devices. However, unless you have one of the few supported devices (Blackjack 2 is not), it won’t let you grab the software. Thankfully, the folks over at xda-developers and PPC-Geeks have the .cab file posted on their forums. Grab it from the links below and transfer it to your BlackJack II via ActiveSync. Then find it in file explorer on your device and click to install. Open the app up and enjoy free Pandora streaming on your BlackJackII. You’ll need to have an active account set up on their website before you can enjoy the streaming tunes action. Granted, the sound quality is not quite as good as the website streaming. It sounds about 64 Kb to me, but who caares? It’s certainly listenable, and I’m sure in the future they’ll bump up the bitrate (probably for a fee!). Ive got my BlackJack II hooked up for sound in my car, and it’s sweet to listen to Pandora while driving – no commercials! With the relatively low bitrate, I can keep a stream going through my whole commute even when I drop from 3G to Edge.

Here’s some links to the cab files so you can get your Pandora on. I haven’t noticed much difference between versions below, but there appear to be a few circulating.

1.1.4 and 1.0.25 http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=48458&highlight=pandora

Now I’m ready for a streaming Last.FM client for the BlackJack II. I know there’s one that will only scrobble. Anyone?
